Janine Marie Tugonon

*** note… Janine Mari Tugonon ended up winning the Bb. Pilipinas Universe 2012 title…

Bb. #18 Janine Mari TugononLast year’s 1st Runner-up, Janine Marie Tugonon takes another shot at winning one of the Bb. Pilipinas crowns this year! It seems like runners-up running again is becoming a habit and while some are critical, I am just plain glad to see Janine Marie Tugonon try again.

Click here to see my article and photos on Bb. Pilipinas 2011.

Besides, this could be the year of the Pharmacy cum laude graduate; I wouldn’t be surprised if Janine Marie Tugonon goes home with a crown on April 15. Her height of 5’9″ and her ballet dancing skills give her an advantage over many other candidates who might be gorgeous but just don’t have that tallness and grace that are assets when competing abroad.

Add to her resume – being the Miss Pharmacy and Miss UST title holder for the year 2010.

Janine Marie Tugonon has a passion that is not normally associated with beauteous babes like her: she LOVES crime stories. This is reflected in  her choice of favorite TV shows like CSI, Criminal Mind and Fringe. While I’m not so much into crime stories, I AM A MAJOR MAJOR FAN OF FRINGE! That’s one thing I have in common with Janine Marie Tugonon, nice to know.

According to the blog Queentessence, Janine Marie Tugonon resembles Bb. Pilipinas International 2008 Patricia Fernandez …  can you see any resemblance between them?

Patricia vs Janine

Sherlyn Gonzales

Bb. #30 Sherlyn Gonzales‘Last but not the least‘ might be a cliche but it’s a good way to describe Sherlyn Gonzales, the final beauty in Bb. Pilipinas batch 2012 to take the stage and strut her stuff.

While she is on the thin side, her face doesn’t show it! But I still think this Mass Communications grad from Adamson needs to eat more ICE CREAM! I heard on the grapevine that Sherlyn Gonzales used to be SO thin that Miss Philippines Earth turned her away. But, now she has managed to eat her way into the Bb. Pilipinas 2012… don’t we just envy her girls?

Observation: This online casino dealer looks extremely young for a 24-year old. I’m totally sure that if she went to the US all the clubs there would surely card her and then accuse her of carrying a fake ID. But there’s nothing us Pinoys can do – we all tend to look young, LOL!

Anywhooo… Sherlyn Gonzales is another pageant veteran with several beauty titles to be proud of: She was 3rd Runner-up Miss Manila Yokohama 2004, 1st Runner-up Miss Fitrum 2005, 1st Runner-up Miss Page Jeans 2005, Mutya ng Pilipinas Star of the Night 2007, Miss Robinson’s 2008, Miss Expo World Philippines 2008 and Saniata Ti Ilocos Sur 2012.

Who does she look like? Well, I’m thinking Amanda Griffin. Remember her? The half-Pinay, half-Brit celebrity model? They share the same vibe…  do you agree?

Enjoy this slide-show of  unforgettable moments of Janine Tugonon (one of my Top 12 picks) at the Bb. Pilipinas 2012 beauty pageant as taken by my hubby Ron T. Although Janine Tugonon didn’t win any of the special awards, she left the stage that night on April 15, 2012, with the greatest beauty title any Filipina could ever hope to win: The Bb. Pilipinas Universe 2012 (Miss Philippines Universe 2012)!

Not bad for last year’s runner-up!

Enjoy the photos :)

I was not surprised when Nicole Schmitz, one of my Top 12 choices in the Bb. Pilipinas 2012, won the International crown. She just has the word ‘beauty queen’ written all over her. She walks, talks and acts like one. This is the 2nd time for Nicole Schmitz to join and wow, she’s really blossomed since she joined the pageant a few years back!

Personally, I think this girl is going to place high, if not win, in the coming Miss International 2012 beauty pageant which will reportedly be held in Okinawa, Japan in October 2012. Reportedly. Let’s see what happens!

In the meantime, enjoy these photos of Nicole Schmitz, Bb. Pilipinas International 2012, as taken by my good hubby, Ron T…

Well, well, well, my very first pick Katrina Jayne Dimaranan made it into the Top 3! She floated above all the other candidates when I saw her first at the Talent Show and I told her that I was expecting her to win a crown. Click here to see my Top 12 and Top 3. So when I saw her again, at the victory after the pageant, I said: “I told you so!”

As Bb. Pilipinas Tourism 2012, Katrina Jayne Dimaranan will represent the Philippines on New Year’s Eve 2012 at the Miss Tourism International beauty pageant in Malaysia. Her pageant is a long ways away, so this dusky beauty has many months to get into top form. Congratulations girl!

Bb. Pilipinas Selects its Golden Batch of Candidates for 2013 Tomorrow, Feb. 21, 2013!

UntitledFinally, after an extended screening process, Bb. Pilipinas is ready to announce who will make it into the list of official candidates for this year’s pageant.

Out of more than 100 aspirants, 70 girls remain, all of whom will do battle in the final screening, which happens tomorrow, Feb 21, 2013 at the Gateway Suites in Quezon City. That number will be pared down to 50 official candidates – a significant number for the Bb. Pilipinas organization as it celebrates its 50th Anniversary this year!

One of the biggest questions is – how many Bb. Pilipinas crowns are at stake this 2013?

The press release I received from Bb. Pilipinas says:

“…candidates will have the rare chance of winning one of the three most sought-after crowns in Philippine pageant history: Miss Universe-Philippines, Binibining Pilipinas-International, and Binibining Pilipinas-Tourism.”

Three things that crossed my mind when I read the above:

Elaine Kay Moll (left) with ABQ author Joyce Burton Titular

Elaine Kay Moll (left) with ABQ author Joyce Burton Titular

First: Dashed are the hopes of pageant fans who were expecting to see a Supranational title given away this year after Elaine Kay Moll won 3rd Runner up in the international pageant held last year.

(Elaine Kay Moll was Bb. Pilipinas’ first runner-up in 2012 and was unexpectedly given the chance to represent the Philippines in Miss Supranational 2012.)

However, coronation night is still in April, who knows what changes may happen between now and then?!

Personally, ABQ would LOVE to see a fourth crown given away! The only downside to that is once you’ve won a Bb. Pilipinas title, you can’t join the pageant again. So the Supranational title-holder will have to be happy with that title and forget any dream of joining again to go after the most coveted Universe title.

Katrina Jayne Dimaranan, Bb. Pilipinas Tourism 2012

Katrina Jayne Dimaranan, Bb. Pilipinas Tourism 2012

Second: They are giving away a Tourism title but last year’s winner, Katrina Dimaranan, has yet to compete in the Miss Tourism Queen International because the pageant was either delayed or cancelled due to problems with production. Does this mean Katrina won’t compete abroad anymore? That the MTQI is still considered a viable international pageant for Bb. Pilipinas to send a candidate to? And if Katrina doesn’t represent the Philippines abroad, does this mean she can compete again in Bb. Pilipinas? All I can say is what a waste if we don’t send this girl abroad to compete!

Third: Note the change of title for the Universe winner. She’s no longer going to be called Bb. Pilipinas Universe but Miss Universe Philippines.

The panel of screening judges include ABS-CBN Special Projects Head Chit Guerrero, ABS-CBN head writer Chris Violago, Miss Universe 2010 4th Runner Up Venus Raj, Miss Universe 2011 3rd Runner Up Shamcey Supsup, and Miss Universe 2012 1st Runner Up Janine Tugonon.

Coronation night of the 2013 Binibining Pilipinas beauty pageant will be telecast live on April 14 via ABS-CBN and is brought to you by the Araneta Center. ABQ hopes to see you at the Bb. Pilipinas 50th Anniversary Edition!!!

The 50 Bb. Pilipinas 2013 contestants at the Talent Show... beauty queens Nicole Schmitz, Janine Tugonon, Shamcey Supsup and Katrina Dimaranan up in front!

The 50 Bb. Pilipinas 2013 contestants at the Talent Show… beauty queens Nicole Schmitz, Janine Tugonon, Shamcey Supsup and Katrina Dimaranan up in front!

I have been dying to see all 50 girls in Bb. Pilipinas 2013 and I finally got my first glimpse of them all (as official candidates) in the Talent Show held last Saturday, March 9, 2013 at the Gateway Mall Activity Center.

My first impression and predictions? I’ll tackle all that in my next posts.

For now, here are my thoughts on the 16 lasses who chose to present their talents:

Predictably, most contestants chose to sing. What can you do when we are a nation of songbirds and karaoke kings? The second popular talent presented was dancing. No surprise there either. Then there were a couple unexpected presentations: a hoola-hoop number and a magic show.

Then we had one declamation. We Pinoys LOVE declamation. I trace it back to all those declamation contests in elementary and high school; contests which our teachers seemed quite fond of. It was a great way to torture students who needed to improve their crappy grades, LOL!

But I wonder if any contestant ever won Miss Talent in Bb. Pilipinas history because of her declamation skills… hmmm… do any of you pageant history buffs know anything about this? Feeling ko wala pang nananalo dahil sa declamation…  but correct me please, if I’m wrong :)

As for my prediction for Bb. Pilipinas Talent 2013 – I can only guess. Unlike the three previous years where it was pretty clear to me who would win (Krista Kleiner in 2010, Shamcey Supsup in 2011 and Katrina Dimaranan in 2012) this year is a bit more difficult. No one had a presentation that really knocked me out. But I did enjoy each one!

Nevertheless, I shall hazard a guess – that Anna Carmina Antonio (#11, below) the contestant who did the magic show will win because it was the most unique presentation in the Talent Show and she was pretty good at her tricks. Most of all, she left me wondering how she fit into those tiny little silver shorts that looked no bigger than a hanky. I guess it’s just MAGIC, LOL! Okay, I’m just teasing!!! Anna Carmina Antonio really looked awesome in her magician’s outfit, for true!

Anna Carmina Antonio from Isabela - my pick for Miss Talent in Bb. Pilipinas 2013 for her skill in prestidigitation!

Anna Carmina Antonio from Isabela – my pick for Miss Talent in Bb. Pilipinas 2013 for her skill in prestidigitation!

My second choice for Miss Talent would be Theresa Marie Fenger (#35, below) who did a song number.  Miss Fenger happens to be the lead singer of the local group Eurasia. Out of all the singers she had the most polished  performance. It involved a lot of  shimmying and butt wiggling which left her breathless but still able to belt out her lines. If I tried that, I’d have an asthma attack in 30 seconds flat. But in Theresa Marie Fenger’s case, it was the audience who couldn’t breathe due to her electric grooves and mooves!

NOTE*** Miss Theresa Fenger was, unfortunately, disqualified from the Bb. Pilipinas 2013 beauty pageant. Please click here to read more about what happened.

Theresa Marie Fenger sings Rihanna songs!

Theresa Marie Fenger sings Rihanna songs! She reminds me of KC Concepcion in this shot…

My third choice is Gabrielle Monique Runnstrom (#44, below), the contestant who danced Flamenco. She TRULY had classic flamenco moves with fancy fingers, sinewy arms and snappy feet. She also had a very Flamenco look about her – intense and yet sexy at the same time. Flamenco is all about attitude and this girl had it nailed!

Gabrielle Monique Runnstron looks fierce in this bullfighting pose. She reminds me of Kuh Ledesma here...

Miss Talent Darkhorse: Maria Angelica de Leon (#31, below).  This gorgeous babe is capable of producing some awesome Soprano notes! Bravo to Mariel de Leon for giving us some REAL entertainment – the offspring of Christopher de Leon and Sandy Andolong sang an opera number that made me think of angels in the sky… but I’m sorry I can’t tell you what the song was since I’m not much of an opera fan (altho I appreciate it) and you know how opera singers are like rock stars? You can’t understand a single word they’re singing… heehehehe…  but in fairness, this girl is my Miss Talent Darkhorse. She could steal the special award from under our noses because some of the judges looked like opera fans to me…

The one and only opera number came from Maria Angelica de Leon

The one and only opera number came from Maria Angelica de Leon

Special mention: Christine Paula Love Bernasor (#18, below) from Ormoc, the contestant who did the modern Pandanggo sa Ilaw dance – she dropped one candle right after she placed it on her head, caught it quickly, mesmerized the audience with a naughty smile and gave a ‘give-me-one-more-try’ signal at us. I was automatically arrested by her charm! If there was a Miss Charming award, it would definitely go to her. AND, her choice of song – a Francis M  a Black Eyed Peas rap song titled Filipino (I think) Bebot, was a great idea!

Oooops! Christine Paula Love Bernasor drops her candle! She reminds me of Patty Betita...

And now for the rest of the talent contestants and my thoughts on their presentations:

Rea Nakpil cries Alms! Alms! in her declamation. Such fabulously fierce eyes on her. No beggar could ever look this beautiful!

Rea Nakpil cries Alms! Alms! in her declamation. Such fabulously fierce eyes on her. No beggar could ever look this beautiful!

I love this dramatic shot above of Rea Nakpil (#43) as she took on the role of a street beggar. Her flashing eyes are her best asset. It is just too bad that the sound system was malfunctioning so we did not get to hear her declamation clearly. However, when she got to the shouting parts, I was pleasantly surprised to hear a big solid voice (and not a shrieking one) come out of her. Watching her writhe, moan and beg on stage was a treat!

Parul Shah gets the best abs award from ABQ for having no vestige of fat on her waistline! Doesn’t she remind you of actress Nanette Medved?

I was dismayed because most of the time, Parul Shah (#33) showed the audience her backside when her front side was far, FAR more interesting! Her abs are to die for. Her smile is a killing machine. And her hips have the sonic qualities of a Tahitian earthquake.

Thanks to her performance, my hubby and I suffered from LSS (last song syndrome) all night. We kept singing – “Shine bright like a diamond…” all night long and laughing our heads off. Anywhoo… Imelda Schwiegart (#45) looked dazzling in her imeldific gown which matched her song and made me think of Marilyn Monroe. Imelda wins the Sexiest Singer Award from ABQ!

This number had me at the edge of my chair; I was so scared she’d drop her towering load of six pots! My seatmate started taking footage – ‘just in case she breaks them all,” he said. Very funny. Well, Anna Carmela Aquino (#10) did not break a single pot but she had me and the rest of the crowd squealing in fright because there were a few moments that looked scary. Good job with the pots, grrrrl!

A dance interpretation from Jan Helen Villanueva… check out the Bb. crown, it’s right on her head!

We all felt bad for Jan Helen Villanueva (#40); because of a mix-up in her music, she ended up lying in a fetal position for several minutes on stage as she waited and waited and WAITED for her song to begin. You know how some dance numbers start with the dancer curled up on the floor? Anyway, when her song, Ave Maria, finally started playing, Jan Helen Villanueva was all over the stage leaping and twirling and doing high kicks. She also did a pretty neat flip at one point. Love it!

It’s really wonderful when contestants choose great songs with depth to entertain us – Jacqueline Alexandra Mayoralgo (#42) dished out “Think of Me” from the Phantom of the Opera and I’m sure she was hoping that the judges would think of her come coronation night on April 14, 2013!

Bb. Pilipinas 2013 Press Presentation: Candidates 41 – 50 !!!

Dear ABQ Readers:

The Bb. Pilipinas 2013 Press Presentation held at the ballroom of the Makati Shangril-La Hotel on March 18, 2013 was a blast! All 50 contestants have leveled up since the Talent show a week ago and I expect them to keep leveling-up as coronation night approaches!

But I am still having a hard time choosing my favorites for the 3 crowns that will be awarded come coronation night in mid-April. In the years of Venus and Shamcey, I spotted my winners fast. Specially with Shamcey – she was my winner the moment I set eyes on her. But in the year of Janine, it was not easy for me to pick my favorites and this 2013 is the same! Too many beautiful women to choose from!

Anyway, here are the 50 contestants in Bb. Pilipinas 2013 (in batches of 10) at the Press Presentation. Those highlighted in Red were the ones I liked the most. Unless specifically mentioned, they are not necessarily my Top Choices yet, but for me, they did outshine the others at the Press Presentation!

CONTESTANTS 41-50

Bb. Pilipinas 2013 - Contestants 41 to 50

Bb. Pilipinas 2013 – Contestants 41 to 50

41. Ariella Arida - 24 yrs - Laguna

41. Ariella Arida – 24 yrs – Laguna

Ariella Arida has a South American vibe to her. She reminds me of that petite Filipina model/socialite from the 70s or 80s – she is now a shoe designer (you see her designs in SM and Robinson’s etc) and her last name starts with a P. I just can’t seem to remember her name! Anyway, Ariella Arida’s strongest features are her piercing eyes. Her lean, athletic body comes from all the running she does; in fact, she recently completed her first-ever 21k marathon! This 24 year old comes from Laguna and is a Chemistry grad.

**********

42. Jacquline Alexandra Mayoralgo - 24 years - Makati

42. Jacqueline Alexandra Mayoralgo – 24 years – Makati

This soprano is a heavy-weight not just in singing but also in lifting weights. Jacqueline Alexandra Mayoralgo loves going to the gym and you can see it in her well-defined, trim legs. In the Bb. Pilipinas 2013 Talent Show, she was the last contestant to perform- she sang something from her favorite musical, Phantom of the Opera. I like her hair and styling better in the Press Presntation (than in the Talent Show) because it made her look more model-like. Check out my blog post on the Bb. Pilipinas 2013 Talent Show here…

**********

43. Rhea Nakpil - 23 years - San Mateo, Rizal

43. Rhea Nakpil – 23 years – San Mateo, Rizal

Actress/Model Rhea Nakpil just has that over-all bright feeling when she is on stage. Like as if she’s just happy to see everyone. However, this lady is truly a thespian at heart – she showed us her ‘dark’ side at the Bb. Pilipinas 2013 Talent Show when she took on the character of a beggar and did a declamation piece crying, “Alms, alms, alms!” I have a stunning dramatic shot of her in my blog post for the Talent Show. Just click on the link! While she’s got a terrific smile, I personally prefer her dramatic look over her sweet and bubbly one…

**********

44.Gabrielle Monique Runnstrom - 19 years - Las Pinas

44.Gabrielle Monique Runnstrom – 19 years – Las Pinas

If I were to give out a special award for the most adorable catwalk at the Bb. Pilipinas 2013 Press Presentation, it would have to go to Gabrielle Monique Runnstrom. She just kept throwing us one flirtatious smile after another and it made her stand out in her set of 10 contestants. We first met this half-Swedish Kuh Ledesma look-alike at the Bb. Pilipinas 2013 Talent Show where she showed off her Flamenco Skills which I really liked because she can move like a real Spanish dancer… And from what we can see in the collage above, Gabrielle Monique Runnstrom has a pageant-worthy body!

**********

45. Imelda Schweighart - 17 - Puerto Princesa

45. Imelda Schweighart – 17 – Puerto Princesa

Every time Imelda Schweighart comes out on stage, I think of the late Melody Gersbach, Bb. Pilipinas International 2009. Both are half-German. But while Melody was more of the Disney Princess type, Imelda sizzles like Marilyn Monroe – hot, hot, HOT!  IMHO, Imelda had the sexiest performance at the Bb. Pilipinas 2013 Talent Show (she sang Rihanna’s Diamonds) and I think she has a strong chance of winning the International crown. (Unfortunately, she’s only 17 so that cancels her out for the Universe title which has 18 as it’s minimum age.) If she wins the International title, I’d have her work hard on losing just a few more strategic pounds and toning up the legs a bit. Imelda Schweighart is definitely in my list of favorites!

**********

46. Amanda Noelle Navasero - 21 years - Makati

46. Amanda Noelle Navasero – 21 years – Makati

Many newbies have to try and try again just to qualify as an official Bb. Pilipinas candidate. Others join local pageants first before giving the Philippines’ number 1 pageant a try. But Amanda Noelle Navasero is one of those few girls who come out of nowhere and then suddenly, she’s in the list! Amanda Noelle Navasero has a sweet smile that I adore – for me, it is her best asset. Her slight frame gives her that ramp-model look; I can see this College of St. Benilde tourism student burning up the catwalk in the future at Fashion Week!

**********

47. Aiyana Mickiewicz - 3 years - Baguio City

47. Aiyana Mickiewicz – 23 years – Baguio City

Aiyana Mickiewicz. Love the contrasting porcelain skin and red lipstick. That never fails to capture my attention. Although she looked good at the Bb. Pilipinas 2013 Talent Show where she did a Belly Dancing number, I loved her look more here at the Press Presentation because she had a more queenly aura. Even if she is as pale as a Twilight vampire, it suits her beauty. Her penchant for working out in the gym has paid off; Aiyana Mickiewicz looked hot in her swimsuit!

**********

48. Angeli Dione Gomez - 19 years - Cebu City

48. Angeli Dione Gomez – 19 years – Cebu City

One of my favorite faces in Bb. Pilipinas 2013! Angeli Dione Gomez has the perfect look for television; I can already see her as a news presenter or a show host. She definitely exudes intelligence and sharpness. And I imagine she is well-spoken coming from a highly respected family in the Queen City of the South, Cebu. Good legs, tight body, thanks to horse-back riding. But an accident forced her to stop ‘horsing around’ so she now sticks to Poi, juggling and hoops. She did a nifty Hoola Hoop number at the Bb. Pilipinas 2013 Talent Show, click here to see more!

**********

49. Herlie Kim Artigue - 22 years - Cebu City

49. Herlie Kim Artigue – 22 years – Cebu City

Love this girl, what a smile! Pinay beauty talaga… Herlie Kim Artigue’s best asset is her gorgeous Filipina smile which exudes warmth and hospitality. Beauties like her belong on tourism advertisements for the Philippines. She’ll make everyone abroad think it’s really fun in the Philippines (and it is, if you’re hanging out with the right people!) Herlie Kim Artigue comes to Bb. Pilipinas with a 4th RU achievement in the Miss Cebu 2012. Not baaaad, Herlie gurlie!

**********

50. Ma. Cristina Ann Pascual - 21 years - Taytay, Rizal

50. Ma. Cristina Ann Pascual – 21 years – Taytay, Rizal

Ma. Cristina Ann Pascual‘s nickname’ Krisma’ fits her well because she got tons of Charisma with a capital C! For me, she looks like a cross between sexy actress Carmi Martin and the late Melody Gersbach, Bb. Pilipinas International 2009. What do you think? I’m loving the photogenic smile and the curves on this Miss PSBA 2012 winner and even is she is not as tall as some of the Eiffel towers in this batch, Ma. Cristina Ann Pascual might just sneak past them into the Semi-finals!

**********

The coronation night of Bb. Pilipinas 2013, the Gold Edition will be on April 14, 2013. It will be aired live on ABS-CBN. But I hope you’ll step out of your homes that night to watch the show live with us at the Araneta Coliseum. It IS the 50th Anniversary of Bb. Pilipinas after all! You can get tickets at TicketNet – hope to see you there!

Bb. Pilipinas Disqualifies Theresa Fenger Due to Racy Photos?

The disqualified Theresa Fenger (left) has been replaced by KC Cahandig

The disqualified Theresa Fenger (left) has reportedly been replaced by KC Cahandig who is now the new Binibini #35 (KC’s photo from Missosology.info)

Received the disturbing news from an ABQ reader yesterday that pageant favorite Theresa Fenger (aka Lana Roi of the all-girl group Eurasia) has been disqualified from the roster of official candidates of Bb. Pilipinas 2013 due to the discovery of racy photos she did for a magazine. This news was supported by some pageant fans close to the Bb. Pilipinas camp as well as Missosology.info.

While I don’t argue much with Bb. Pilipinas’ policy of not accepting candidates who have posed for such photo spreads, it breaks my heart to see Theresa Fenger go. And I was going to put her in ABQ’s Top 15!

Grrrrr…..

In cases like this, I just wish that it would not reach the point of disqualification. It’s embarrassing for the girl and makes Bb. Pilipinas look like a killjoy. If only such details came out during the screening so you can deal with issues as early as possible.

Remember the case of Sandra Seifert? She got disqualified 2 days before coronation in the Bb. Pilipinas 2009 pageant because of a similar photo spread that she had done for a magazine. However, Sandra went on to join and win the Miss Philippines Earth pageant later that year.

Will Theresa Fenger do a Sandra Seifert and seek vindication by joining either Miss World Philippines or Miss Philippines Earth? It’s unlikely. Theresa Fenger is already 25 years old, a year too old for Miss World Philippines and her handler is reportedly not inclined to send her to Miss Philippines Earth (reportedly due to certain affiliations). Of course, Theresa can always go independent and join on her own. Sandra Seifert was also 25 years old when she won MPE 2009.

But the story is not entirely that sad because one woman’s loss is another one’s gain. Replacing Theresa Fenger is KC Cahandig from General Santos City (where Shamcey Supsup is from). I can just imagine her surprise at the unexpected turn of events. Wouldn’t it be wild if she performs so well that she grabs one of the crowns? We’ll see what happens on April 14, 2013… can’t wait for it!

As supporters of contestant Theresa Fenger (an ABQ favorite) continue to reel from her shocking disqualification from Bb. Pilipinas 2013 (read more here) the pageant takes a short hiatus for the Holy Week break. I’m sure the girls won’t go on hiatus though – they’ll be training, dieting and working out as much as they can.

In the meantime, ABQ continues with it’s review of the contestants and their performance at the Bb. Pilipinas 2013 Press Presentation held at the ballroom of the Makati Shangril-La Hotel on March 18, 2013.

In this post are my thoughts on Contestants 11 to 20. There are a total of 50 contestants, just scroll down to see my thoughts on them.  Those highlighted in Red were the ones I liked the most. Unless specifically mentioned, they are not necessarily my Top Choices yet, but for me, they did outshine the others at the Press Presentation!

11. Anna Carmina Antonio - 22 years - Isabela

11. Anna Carmina Antonio – 22 years – Isabela

Anna Carmina Antonio has the curves that I would like to have if I were reincarnated. The way her waist tucks in…   how her hips slighty flare out…  and the flat abs that leave me lacking for words! And she’s got that wholesome way of carrying her kittenish beauty. Anna Carmina Antonio happens to be one of my bets for Miss Talent in Bb. Pilipinas 2013. She did a smooth magic tricks performance; click here to see photos of the talent show! Anna Carmina Antonio, who works as a Hotel Front Desk officer, comes to this pageant with 2 local honors: The Miss Tourism title in the Philippines Youth Pageant 2008 and the Bb. Isabela title in 2009.

12. Camille Carla Nazar - 23 years - Bulacan

12. Camille Carla Nazar – 23 years – Bulacan

With Janine Tugonon’s 1st RU placement in Miss Universe last year, we are seeing more Morenas coming out of the woodwork to try their luck at the Bb. Pilipinas beauty pageant. Camille Carla Nazar is one of those lovely Morenas – sun-kissed skin with a sparkling smile that will surely stun the judges this year. But she’s not just about skin-deep beauty; she’s also smart with a heart. Camille Carla Nazar loves children and is studying to become an Elementary School Teacher (golly do we need more of them!) so that she can nurture and mentor our young ones.

13. Charmaine Elima - 20 years - Binangonan, Rizal

13. Charmaine Elima – 20 years – Binangonan, Rizal

If our beauty queens were like coffee, Charmaine Elima would be a dark and fruity blend of Venus Raj and Janine Tugonon. With that said, Charmaine is one of my front-runners for Bb. Pilipinas Universe this year, however, it would be interesting to see her win any other crown. Some advice: I think Charmaine Elima has to walk the footsteps of Venus and Janine by staying friendly, humble and teach-able but with that indomitable Pinay fighting spirit. Her strongest asset is her doll-like face but it could also turn out to be her weakness because her cheekbones and jawline are too strong. At least for me. She needs to be softened down with some smart make-up tactics. And avoid facial expressions that are too strong. Body is excellent just keep working out and staying trim. I’m not surprised that Charmaine Elima already has 2 local titles: Miss Rizal 2012 and Miss Mandaluyong 2013. Winner!

14. Mary Rose Pujanes - 20 years - Batangas

14. Mary Rose Pujanes – 20 years – Batangas

This Miss Batangan 2011 title holder brought summer into the cool ballroom of the hotel when she got on stage! (Batangan, btw, means “Batangas Tagalog” which is the dialect spoken  in most of Batangas. Mary Rose Pujanes ‘ 1st RU in Miss Batangan 2011 happens to be contestant #27 – Vania Valiry Vispo) What do I like about Mary Rose Pujanes? Well, just look at those dark gorgeous pools that make up her eyes. And the sultry lips that sizzle. And that brain which can figure out all those numbers! LOL! Yes, Mary Rose Pujanes took up Accounting at a college in Tanuan, Batangas.

15. Pia Wurtzbach - 23 years - Cagayan de Oro

15. Pia Wurtzbach – 23 years – Cagayan de Oro

Rising up from the ashes like a phoenix, actress Pia Romero returns to the limelight as Pia Wurtzbach, Contestant #15 in the Bb. Pilipinas 2013 beauty pageant. Pang-TV talaga ang beauty ni Pia – she was a former ABS-CBN talent but now dreams of doing a Ruffa Gutierrez – succeeding not just as a TV talent but as a beauty queen. This Filipina-German has appeared in several Kapamilya shows like “K2BU,” “ASAP,” “Your Song,” and “Aryana.”  Pia Wurtzbach’s stunning face is the first thing that grabbed my attention mostly because of her piercing eyes. Although I wished there was more meat on her, I can’t deny that her muscular frame looked fab in the bikini she wore at the Press Presentation. Me likey this grrrl!

16. Joana Cindy Miranda - 20 years - Nueva Ecija

16. Joanna Cindy Miranda – 20 years – Nueva Ecija

Imagine that! Quitting as a co-host on Wiltime Good Time just to she how far she can go at Bb. Pilipinas. Joanna Cindy Miranda, who was also a Pinoy Big Brother housemate, is taking a risk but not an unfounded one. With her camera-perfect face, she has a big chance of stealing the thunder from any of the front-runners in Bb. Pilipinas 2013. AND, win or lose, Joanna Cindy Miranda easily return to TV where a face this telegenic deserves to be!

17. Carin Adrianne Ramos - 24 years - San Pedro, Laguna

17. Carin Adrianne Ramos – 24 years – San Pedro, Laguna

Ah, yes, even prettier than when I saw her first at the Mutya ng Pilipinas 2012. Carin Adrianne Ramos was in my Top 12 favorites during that pageant and I’m happy to say that this professional nurse entered the semi-finals and won a minor title – Mutya ng Informatics. For your… ehrm… informatics…  Carin Adrianne Ramos’ Mom joined Bb. Pilipinas in 1984 (the year of Desiree Verdadero) but backed out because she fell in love. (Thankfully, these days, falling in love and being a beauty queen can go hand in hand.) So Carin Adrianne Ramos is just out to finish where her Mom left off. Don’t you just love stories like that?

18. Christine Paula Love Bernasor - 25 years - Ormoc City

18. Christine Paula Love Bernasor – 25 years – Ormoc City

On her Pinterest site, Christine Paula Love Bernasor describes herself as a, “Foodie. Social Nerd. Art Lover. Trying to rule the world one day at a time…”  This Registered Nurse  has looks that could give her patients a heart attack: tall, tan and lovely, just like the song says. Although Christine Paula Love Bernasor was a victim of bullying as a child, she has grown to be compassionate towards those who are bullied and have less in life. As a result, she spends her free time as a volunteer for feeding programs. Interestingly enough, Christine Paula Love Bernasor is a a member of Couchsurfing; people who travel and sleep on other people’s couches, what an oddball group! BTW, Christine Paula Love Bernasor gave a wicked Pandanggo sa Ilaw performance at the Talent Show of Bb. Pilipinas 2013. Check it out here!

19. Hannah Ruth Sison - 24 years - Makati

19. Hannah Ruth Sison – 24 years – Makati

There’s so much to like about Hannah Ruth Sison – starting with her ‘long-legged’ as Melanie would say. Her looong legs give her that svelte look and her clean type of beauty makes it easy to change her look depending upon the styling, the need and maybe even the weather! Hannah Ruth Sison happens to be a pastor’s kid. Her Dad, Pastor Gani Sison (who is thrilled that his daughter might just become a Bb. Pilipinas winner) heads a missions organization called ITeams or International Teams Philippines. This Isabelle Daza look-a-like is gifted in the arts – she does multimedia art (animation and graphics media) and is an instructor at College of Saint Benilde.

20. Bea Rose Santiago - 23 years - Masbate

20. Bea Rose Santiago – 23 years – Masbate

When you first meet Bea Rose Santiago, you think, wow! Nice! Pretty girl! But when you see her on stage, she transforms into a queen…  like in a jaw-dropping way. Effortless siya mag-project at napaka-regal ng kanyang galaw. Talo sila sa walk ni Bea Rose Santiago! So it’s no wonder she placed in the Top 10 of the Miss Tourism Queen of the Year International 2012. Bea, who was Mutya ng Pilipinas Overseas 2011, got assigned by the Mutya organization to compete in that pageant. I can see her doing well for the nation if she wins Bb. Pilipinas International. Pwede din sa Tourism or Supranational (if that title is given out). Click here to read my article on Bea Rose Santiago where she talks about her favorite hobby/sport – backpacking!

The coronation night of Bb. Pilipinas 2013, the Gold Edition will be on April 14, 2013. It will be aired live on ABS-CBN. ABQ’s Top 15: My Golden Favorites in Bb. Pilipinas 2013!

$
0
0

After much hemming and hawing I finally have my list of golden favorites in Bb. Pilipinas 2013. This was a particularly difficult batch to study, not only because there were 50 of them, but because they are all so competitively beautiful in varied ways. This time around, I put less emphasis on height (although that’s still important) mostly because last year saw not-so-tall girls doing well in beauty pageants. A development that I’m happy about. So here goes… ABQ’s Top 15: My Golden Favorites in Bb. Pilipinas 2013!!!

FOR THE UNIVERSE CROWN: I am torn in half between Charmaine Elima and Parul Shah. Charmaine has my brains while Parul has my heart. To me, both are “Universables”!!!

CHARMAINE ELIMA VERSUS PARUL SHAH

CHARMAINE ELIMA VERSUS PARUL SHAH

#13 Charmaine Elima

If people were like coffee, then Charmaine Elima would be a perfect blend of Venus Raj and Janine Tugonon with a South American undertone. The angles on her face give her that undertone; angles that also make me think of beauty queens from Venezuela and the Dominican Republic. However, the very same angles on her face could come off too strong so she needs to go softer on the jaw and cheekbones, specially when face-to-face with judges. As for her communication skills, Charmaine Elima is fluent in English (can speak continuously without grasping for words) however, the grammar is not so accurate. Thankfully, foreign judges focus less on grammar and more on charm and making sense. As for her body, she’s got that thin but curvy physique which God only gives to the select few. We just have to accept that, LOL! She may not be so tall at 5’7″, but neither is last year’s Miss Universe winner Olivia Culpo who is 5’6″. If Charmaine Elima wins the Bb. Pilipinas Universe crown I believe the Philippines will be sending one of the strongest candidates ever to the Miss Universe beauty pageant.

#33 Parul Shah

The first time I saw Parul Shah was late last year at the World Trade Center in Manila. The second I saw this Fil-Indian beauty with Pangasinan roots, I knew she was a winner! She confidentially told me that she was planning to join Bb. Pilipinas 2013 and, I know this was quite rash of me, but I said, “I think you’d be good for the crown, you have my support.” I had another chance to see her up close, without a smidgen of make-up when we had lunch together. It wasn’t a planned meeting; Parul just happened to be with a common friend. Her winning asset is her beauty queen smile. It’s not manufactured; it’s a sincere, beautiful smile that can light up a room. Being gorgeous even without make-up is also a big plus because contestants have to meet the judges face-to-face. Being raised in Dubai and having lived in Baguio add to her dimension. Her 5’8″ physique is bikini-worthy, made even lovelier by her natural tan. If she wins Bb. Pilipinas Universe, I can almost see Donald Trump going nuts over our Parul Shah!

FOR THE INTERNATIONAL CROWN:

BEA SANTIAGO VERSUS MARIEL DE LEON

BEA SANTIAGO VERSUS MARIEL DE LEON

# 15 Bea Santiago

Fantastic on stage! This Canadian-based backpacking Filipina has already been tried and tested on the international stage; Bea Rose Santiago entered the Top 10 of the Miss Tourism Queen of the Year International 2012 held in China last year in December. That’s a pretty mean feat considering China is our territorial adversary. A separate thought: If Bb. Pilipinas sends a contestant to the Miss Supranational this year, I think this 5’9″ mestiza from Masbate would be perfect!

# 31 Mariel de Leon

Mariel de Leon was initially my first choice for the Bb. International crown simply because she looks like a baby doll, has a fabulous pedigree (her parents are award-winning actors Christopher de Leon and Sandy Andolong) and comes in a lovely 5’8″ package. However, I feel that this Batangueña needs to live up to the fierce Batangas spirit and ditch the sweet girl-next-door feel. So if I were the goddess of beauty pageants, I’d give her a runner-up placement then groom her for next year. She is only 19 years old, after all. But just in case she wins a crown this year, my advice would be to work on the walk, lose the middle fat, get firmer and keep on training in all aspects of pageant competition.

FOR THE TOURISM CROWN:

RIA RABAJANTE VERSUS MUTYA DATUL

RIA RABAJANTE VERSUS MUTYA DATUL

# 1 Ria Rabajante

This dusky morena has a Janine Tugonon vibe going on. Ria Rabajante also has a slinkier version of Janine’s famous Cobra Walk and a body that I would kill for – a firm and muscular frame tempered by serpentine curves stretched out in a 5’7″ figure. While I was initially not too taken by her, Ria’s beauty has grown on me like fungus and I cannot get this Pasigueña’s piercing after-image out of my head.

# 39 Mutya Datul

This is my 2nd time to see Mutya Datul compete in a national-level pageant and she has leveled-up. From being on the scrawny side, this Isabela native has gained muscle without losing curves. And I so love her face – she is my choice for Most Photogenic! My concern though with Mutya is her communication skills – has that leveled-up too? Because if she’s improved in that area, then the 49 other girls need to be quaking in their heels. Personally, I think she should just communicate in her own dialect. But whatever she chooses to speak, I’m confident Mutya Datul will shine bright like a diamond come coronation night!

WILDCARD GIRLS: My Wildard favorites could pass for sisters!

CASSANDRA NAIDAS VERSUS HANNAH RUTH SISON

CASSANDRA NAIDAS VERSUS HANNAH RUTH SISON

# 14  Hannah Ruth Sison

This Pastor’s Kid could easily snatch one of the 3 crowns; I’m thinking either the International or the Tourism crown. This Ilocana’s looong legs and 5’7½” height give her that svelte look and her clean type of beauty could launch her into the Top 5.

# 24 Cassandra Naidas

I’m thinking that this Lasalle Psych grad from Antipolo kind of looks like a cross between Solenn Heusaff and Gloria Diaz. One of her key assets is height: Cassandra Naidas stands at a stately 5’10″. I can imagine her competing in Miss International. Or if Bb. Pilipinas sends a contestant to Miss Supranational, Cassandra would be a good choice.

MY OTHER TOP 15 FAVORITES:

ABQ'S FAVORITES FOR THE TOP 15: Zandra Flores, Maria Mustonen, Pia Wurtzbach, Joanna Cindy Miranda, Merry Joyce Respicio, Gabrielle Monique Runnstrom

ABQ’S OTHER FAVORITES FOR THE TOP 15: Zandra Flores, Maria Mustonen, Pia Wurtzbach, Joanna Cindy Miranda, Merry Joyce Respicio, Gabrielle Monique Runnstrom

# 2 Zandra Flores

Zandra Flores is on my list for two reasons: her chameleon-like ability to look so different depending on her styling and for being on the cover of the fantasy book “The Necklace of the Gods” by New York Times best selling author Alison Goodman. This 5’7″ Cellular Pathologist traces her roots to Pangasinan.

# 3 Maria Mustonen

One of the fiercest girls in this batch of Bb. Pilipinas contestants, Maria Mustonen makes me think of a lioness on the hunt. Among the petite contestants, this 5’6″ stunner is my ultimate favorite!

#15 Pia Wurtzbach

Rising up from the ashes like a phoenix, actress Pia Romero returns to the limelight as Pia Wurtzbach, Contestant #15 in the Bb. Pilipinas 2013 beauty pageant. Pia Wurtzbach’s stunning face, penetrating eyes and sinewy 5’7½ frame CANNOT be ignored.

# 16 Joanna Cindy Miranda

The Pinoy Big Brother housemate with a camera-perfect face has the most luscious set of smackers that make me think of… well… hmm….  Echo and Bunnymen’s  1987 hit “Lips Like Sugar”. That song could have been written for this 5’7″ darling.

# 25 Merry Joyce Respicio

Bulacan’s Merry Joyce Respicio with her toothy grin reminds me of Gem Padilla, Bb. Pilipinas Universe 1990! And the height – wow, a clean 5’11″. No wonder she’s been featured in Fashion Week, Cosmo Philippines and Metro Wear – she’s got the look of someone born for the runway!

# 28 Mercegrace Raquel

Pert looks, burnished skin and a mathematical mind make up this 5’10″ blogging beauty from Nueva Ecija. Check out Mercegrace Raquel’s blog to get to know her better;  just click here to get there!

# 44 Gabrielle Monique Runnstrom

The one quality that makes Gabrielle Monique Runnstrom stand out in a crowd is her ability to flirt with the audience. This 5’7″ Flamenco dancer who’s part Swedish knows how to catch everyone’s attention with her expressive eyes and vivacious smile!

That wraps up my Top 15! However, there are 3 girls on the low end of the height spectrum that I’d like to highlight mostly because I believe that we should never underestimate beautiful women that come in smaller packages:

ABQ’S PETITE FAVORITES:

ABQ's PETITE FAVORITES - Imelda Schweighart, Angeli Dione Gomez, Maria Cristina Ann Pascual

ABQ’s PETITE FAVORITES – Imelda Schweighart, Angeli Dione Gomez, Maria Cristina Ann Pascual

# 45 Imelda Schweigart

Imelda Schweigart reminds me so much of our beloved Melody Gersbach, Bb. Pilipinas International 2009, rest her soul. Although Imelda is only 5’6″, she exudes this sexy Marilyn Monroe aura that makes her larger than life. If there were a Bb. Pilipinas Young title, this 17 year-old German Pinay sweetheart would win it!

# 48 Angeli Dione Gomez

This is a face that belongs on TV reading me the news of the day! This 19 year old bright-eyed Cebuana would give Imelda Schweigart a run for her money if there were a Bb. Pilipinas Young title being offered.

# 50 Maria Cristina Ann Pascual

Maria Cristina Ann Pascual is another beauty who seems to be channeling Melody Gersbach. What a way to end the Golden 50 of Bb. Pilipinas 2013 – with a fair lady to win our hearts!

The Bb. Pilipinas 2013 Coronation is just days away! Since it’s the 50th anniversary pageant of Bb. Pilipinas, you might want to get out of your comfort zone and come watch the pageant live at Araneta Coliseum on April 14, 2013. Tickets are available at Ticketnet. Of course, you can always just sit back and relax at home while watching it (slightly delayed telecast) on ABS-CBN. Those of you outside of the Philippines with access to the Filipino Channel will also be able to watch it!

Just wanted to share with you the photos my hubby took at the Bb. Pilipinas Fashion show held April 11, 2013 at the Araneta Coliseum featuring all 50 candidates of Bb. Pilipinas 2013. I am missing one candidate tho – I feel really bad about it but somehow we missed taking a shot of her – #21 Lourenz Remetillo. And she looked fabulous at the show!

If anyone has a photo of Lourenz Remetillo and wouldn’t mind seeing it in my blog, please email it to jaedeelight@yahoo.com and I will make sure to credit you for it! Maraming Salamat!

And now, here are the 49 candidates wearing the collection of Asia’s ashion Tzar, Pitoy Moreno:

Those highlighted in red are the girls that stood out for me. If you see any mistakes in names, numbers, spelling, grammar etc. please drop me a comment!

1. Ria Rabajante

Ria Rabajante, who is one of ABQ’s favorites, did very elegant hand movements while presenting this Sulu-Sea-Inspired outfit. It must be difficult being the first contestant in a pageant, but it is wise to put strong girls at the start and end of a pageant line-up.

This gown made me think of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. Two things that I think Jan does NOT have.Unless it’s pride over wearing a Pitoy Moreno creation. But she does have the elegance to carry a gown as poofy as this. Excellent walk!

If you’re a solid Bb. Pilipinas pageant fan, then I’m sure you’ve seen photos of the Queens’ Red Carpet entrance and our glorious Parade! But I’m guessing there are not too many backstage photos out there (although I know that Alma Concepcion was uploading backstage shots on Instagram).

Anyway, here are a handful of photos I took while we were waiting backstage for the Bb. Pilipinas 2013 to start with the Parade of Queens…

Again, I will need help identifying a Queen or two, just leave a comment or a correction! Thanks for the help :)

Desiree Verdadero (far left) shows off lots of leg and her golden gladiator heels! She is the Queen with the most character! Next to her, Dianne Necio, Anna Igpit, Maggie Wilson, IzzaGonzales, Patti Betita, Selina Manalad and Sarah Jane Paez!

Winning candidate Ariella Arida with host Martin Nievera in the Q&A portion of Bb. Pilipinas 2013.

Winning candidate Ariella Arida with host Martin Nievera in the Q&A portion of Bb. Pilipinas 2013.

Just some of my thoughts on the Q&A portion…

To be honest, I wasn’t satisfied, in general, with the answers of our Top 15 contestants in Bb. Pilipinas 2013. Many of them had a strong start but then nerves would take over then they’d start rambling or not making sense. However, there were a few girls who did shine bright!

#41 Ariella Arida – the winner of the Universe Philippines title. The question was about what lesson about life can women teach men. Her answer was – sensitivity. She had one of the better answers and deserved to win based on that. But she still needs to train in the interview portion because it still is an important factor in the Miss Universe pageant. Bravo Ariella Arida Arriba!

#45 Imelda Schweighart – Her question was connected to the Beatles song, “All You Need Is Love” – was that a true or false statement? She answered the question in a roundabout way saying that what we need is to do is spread world peace and positive things and then that will spread love to others. One pageant fan told me that he never ever thought anyone in this day and age would use the ‘world peace’ card. But still, for me, Imelda Schwieghart gave one of the better answers!

Mutya Datul and Martin Nievera duing a light moment in the Q&A portion...

Mutya Datul and Martin Nievera duing a light moment in the Q&A portion…

#39 Mutya Datul – She was asked what advocacy would she pursue after her reign. She replied that wanted to extend help to those in need adding that the BPCI charity arm would be her choice. How I wished she answered in Filipino because her content was GOOD but her mastery in English was not the best. Nevertheless, I believe that choosing her for Supranational was EXCELLENT! I believe her beauty will stand out in Belarus (Europe) where the pageant will be held this year. Bravo Mutya!

# 13 Charmaine Elima – one of my favorite girls was asked what should be kept private in light of the digital age. It breaks my heart to say that she didn’t really make much sense. The last thing I remember her saying was – our personal intentions should be made private. With that said, I STILL believe that Charmaine Elima is a very intelligent young woman, she just got rattled. Of course, host Martin Nievera’s snide comment afterwards (I don’t remember exactly what he said but I remember not feeling good about it) was not kind. We need hosts who will help the girls, not act like they are challenged in the brain department, even if they are.

#43 Rhea Nakpil – her question was about what Filipino trait makes us succeed or shine. She began really well by identifying honesty as the root to our success and heroism. But I think she began to ramble at this point. An okay answer but could be better.

#46 Amanda Navsero – poor Amanda got the worst question of the lot. “Do you think you could be a good Catholic if you believe in the RH Bill?” It is so unfair to be the only contestant to get a politically-tinged question that assumes she is Catholic or understands the Catholic mindset. A bad question, truly. IMHO, lets ditch questions involving politics AND religion. Now to make things worse, the bad question got Amanda all nervous and her answer ended weak with this statement – The RH Bill is good, we should know about it.

Grace Apuad's turn to answer...

Grace Apuad’s turn to answer…

#34 Grace Apuad – I think she gave the best answer out of all the contestants. She was asked what her greatest contribution would be to her local community and she said: Inspiration to the youth. Then she told the story of how she independently took care of herself, even without the help of her parents and was able to finish school. Stories are ALWAYS wonderful tools when answering in the Q&A portion. The key is keeping the short and sweet. Which is what Grace did.

#22 Ellore Punzalan – The Bulletin Reader’s choice winner had a strong start but dropped the ball and ended weak. Her question was about what she would tell the new Pope (Francis) if she had the opportunity to meet him. She began by saying she would congratulate him first then ask him to pray for the Filipino people. BRAVO on that start! But then she began to ramble and lose steam. I think sometimes our girls get nervous because of the crown reaction. They get cowed by the sounds they hear coming from the audience.

#20 Bea Santiago – my favorite girl and winner of the International Philippines title. She gave a middling answer, kind of so-so, but I have interviewed this girl and know that she is smart and ma-chika. She was asked to describe the ideal Filipino and she said that the ideal Filipino is both proud and happy and that they love the Philippines so much and come back all the time because Filipinos always feel at home in the Philippines.

Cindy Miranda... beautiful face, worthy of the Bb. Pilipinas Tourism 2013 title!

Cindy Miranda… beautiful face, worthy of the Bb. Pilipinas Tourism 2013 title!

#16 Cindy Miranda – the winner of the Tourism Philippines title and another favorite of ABQ. Oooh she had a good answer to the question – What is a personal quality that most people remember about you. Cindy said – I’m unstoppable. She added that everything in life she wanted, she did it, even without the permission of parents and friends etc. etc. and this is where her answer began to dwindle. However, she wasn’t lying when she said she was unstoppable because she went on to win one of the 4 crowns.

#12 Camille Nazar – she got the 2nd to the worst question – What country aside from the Philippines fascinates you and why? Ugh. Why would a candidate for a Philippine title talk about another country? Anyway, Camille Nazar spoke in Filipino (I approve) and said that while she doesn’t want to drop the Philippines she chose the US because it is a prosperous nation with a strong President. Funny though because she accidentally referred to Obama as ‘our President’. I’m sure there’s a better way to answer a tough question like this. Any suggestions?

#13 Mariel de Leon – got Boy Abunda as the judge to ask her her question. (How appropriately showbiz, LOL) Question was: Are the best things in life really for free? Mariel enumerated love, family and happiness as things that can’t be bought and that you get them thru respect and love. Speaking of love, I loved her answer and the quality of her voice. Sayang, she did not win a title. But I hope she will get up, dust her knees and move on to a new thing. I’m just wondering… if you were to give her advice on whether to join again or not, what would you say?

#25 Merry Joyce Respicio  – wins the cutest answer award from ABQ! Merry Joyce is an ABQ favorite because of her classic cheekbones and tall frame. Her question: If you were to break one bad habit what would it be? She grinned and said that since she was only 18 years old, she loves eating junk food. It’s one thing she’s like to break because it’s not healthy. Good and simple answer that had the audience chuckling.

Pia Wurtzbach mesmerizes the judges with her piercing eyes and strong answer. She won the Bb. Pilipinas 2013 Runner-up title.

Pia Wurtzbach mesmerizes the judges with her piercing eyes and strong answer. She won the Bb. Pilipinas 2013 Runner-up title.

#15 Pia Wurtzbach – Ah… here is ANOTHER excellent answer. She was asked – What do you think is the greatest achievement of Bb. Pilipinas? Pia replied – the candidates. Not just the winners, she explained, but all of them. She added that their lives change after joining the pageant and then they go on to inspire people. An answer that deserved a crown but winning Runner-up is still an excellent achievement in my book. She now gets top level training and can spend the year considering another shot at a Binibini crown next year.

#33 Parul Shah – my super favorite contestant. She got a question on bullying – What would she tell a child who is being bullied. Parul got off to a good start saying that she would tell the child not to never look down and to respect everyone around you and have humility because this will eradicate the bullies. I think thats how she ended. Another powerful start that ended weak. How I wish she won a crown but the judges have spoken and I abide by that. Now my question regarding Parul is this – is it wise for her to join again?

Well, that wraps up my thoughts on the Q&A. I just wonder if there are ways and techniques of helping our candidates improve in the Q&A area. How do we teach them how to deal with the nervousness and turn it into positive and not negative energy?  I know this is not a nice thing to say, but when I judge at gay beauty pageants, their contestants often do better in the Q&A and are more confident. If the gay beauties can do it well, I so believe the girls can do it well too!

What do you think?

Here are individual shots of the beauty queens that I saw at the Red Carpet cocktails and backstage during the historic Bb. Pilipinas 50th anniversary beauty pageant. There are Queens in photos #4, #5 and #10 that I failed to identify…  I can’t seem to remember their names (senior moment?) If you know them, please leave a comment below.

I just want to take this moment to thank all of you who love and support our Filipina beauty queens. Thanks for the wild applause during the Queens Parade! The final set of queens from the 60s and 70s got the loudest applause but not as loud as the thunderous welcome Gloria Diaz received when she came out!

BTW, this is not a complete collection of Queens who paraded on stage during Bb. Pilipinas Gold but they are the ones that I saw and had the opportunity to photograph that night. The funniest thing was that I was SO busy taking photos of the Queens that I completely forgot to take a photo of myself so I had to ‘borrow’ OPMB Worldwide‘s Red Carpet shot of me.  To OPMB Worldwide, I cropped it so it would fit in my collage format, I hope it’s okay…

Mom, the Wind Beneath my Bb. Pilipinas Crown!

Me at age 5 (I think) with my Mom (isn't she just gorgeous). We were on a boat going to Sangley Point...

Toddler-me with my Mom (isn’t she just gorgeous?). We were on a boat going to Sangley Point…

Every time I run into friends who know me from my beauty queen days, they never fail to ask me, “How’s your Mom?”

Mom was my shadow then, but unlike regular shadows, she was feisty and talked a lot; anyone who met her would never forget her. Delia F. Burton is her name and she has been based in Honolulu for the past decade, far, faaar away from me. How I miss her so much!!!

Happy Mother’s Day Mom, I love you forever!!!

I never really wanted to become a beauty queen. That was the last thing on my mind when I was a teenager. I was boyish and walked like the famous movie pirate, Captain Jack Sparrow. Climbing trees and racing with boys was my idea of fun! Even when I got my first period (which depressed me, by the way), I still kept my rough and tough ways. My dream was to work in the world of men and become a top surgeon or an officer in the US Army just like my Dad, Col. Charles V. Burton. I even harbored dreams of becoming an Astronaut.

But Mom, she had other ideas. Somehow she saw showbiz potential in me and made sure to cultivate it by sending me to ballet, hula and modern jazz classes. Although I never got far with dance classes in terms of becoming professional, the classes taught me how to move gracefully so I could automatically switch between my gangly swagger and my graceful walk depending on what the situation called for.

MEETING MY FIRST MOVIE MOGUL: MANAY ICHU OF SAMPAGUITA FILMS

But my foray into showbiz didn’t really start until the early 80s when Sampaguita Films launched a huge campaign in search of actors for the movie Batch ’81. I was barely 13 years old when Mom sent in my photos – one whole body shot and a close-up (styling by Reggie Regalado). Amazingly, we received a callback from Sampaguita Films for an audition!

So we drove to the place which was located near Ortigas Avenue on one of the side streets; it turned out to be this huge piece of property that looked more like a garden or a forest. That’s where I met “Manay Ichu” or Marichu Vera-Perez Maceda, the daughter of Jose “Doc” Perez, owner of Sampaguita Films.

Her first reaction to me: “Oh, you’re really… YOUNG!”

If I remember correctly, this is one of the photos Mom sent to Sampaguita. Styling was by Reggie Regalado.

If I remember correctly, this is one of the photos Mom sent to Sampaguita. Styling was by Reggie Regalado.

I certainly was very young at the time. On the cusp of womanhood. Not ready to surrender my Jackstones and Chinese Garter and yet excited at the prospect of doing things that only the gown-ups did.

The audition turned out to be a disaster, although I don’t think I realized it then. The scene required me to rush down a grand flight of steps (inside the big mansion of Sampaguita Films) and then have a semi-dramatic discussion with my co-auditionee Charlie Ysmael (who eventually became a TV newscaster for RPN9). But I was only 13 or 14, with NO experience in acting whatsoever and no idea about college frats and violent hazing, which the movie Batch ’81 was all about. In the end, Manay Ichu felt that I was… well… too young for the film but she wanted to ‘save’ me for perhaps a future project.

To this day, I maintain that my audition was terrible but Mom… she tells a different story. In her eyes, I was fabulous and beautiful and should have won a Famas Award for it! It was that kind of faith – the one that could see my potential even if others and I couldn’t see it – that eventually propelled me to win Bb. Pilipinas Universe 1985.

But I am rushing ahead of myself. Let me backtrack a bit…

MEETING MOTHER LILY OF REGAL FILMS

After Sampaguita Films, I tried auditioning for Eat Bulaga (I don’t remember what for, but the audition was held at Horseshoe Drive in Quezon City). Nothing came out of that. Mom, who was getting bolder and bolder as the days went by, decided one day to just show up at the house of Mother Lily Monteverde, the famous owner of Regal Films. And guess what! We got an audience with her! Mom’s persistence paid off and it seemed like Mother Lily liked me enough to introduce me to some of the directors and actors in her fold.

After a couple meetings, Mother Lily offered us a 10-film contract starting with, “Bata pa si ‘Sabel,” a coming-of-age movie about a young girl with two boys in her life . But Mom had a major, major problem with it – I had to do kissing scenes and bed scenes; something she did not agree with. Mom stepped on the brakes and the movie went to Snookie Serna who starred across Albert Martinez and the late Joel Alano who tragically died at age 21 because of a heart attack (of all things!)

That girl on the Hammock (Snooky Serna) would've been me if I had signed that Regal Films contract!

Photo above from this site!

But Mother Lily was serious about me. Serious enough to include me in a few press releases and in one of Regal Films’ promotional tours. I was introduced as an up-and-coming Regal Baby. So even if there was a stalemate between Mom and Mother Lily, it looked like my movie career was underway.

Or so I thought.

My ‘career’ took an unexpected twist at the presscon of movie “Blue Jeans” which starred Dina Bonnevie. Mom and I were there on invitation of Mother Lily and after the presentation, one of the press people in attendance told her this, “Your daughter looks more like a beauty queen than an actress, you should bring her to Renee Salud.”

That encounter opened a whole new level of excitement in my Mom who suddenly realized that maybe this was what she was looking for! So she got the phone number of Renee and the following day called to set an appointment…

MEETING MAMA RENEE

The Renee Salud Design shop on E. Rodriguez Blvd was small but busy. Mom and I were quietly asked to sit in the receiving room to wait and meet this “Mama Renee” character. There were two mannequins in the store window wearing Filipiniana-inspired outfits and I could hear sewing machines starting and stopping in the backroom.

After a 15 minute wait, in swept Mama Renee Salud – who turned out to be, indeed, a character. Flamboyant does not even begin to describe him! His hands never stopped moving and neither did his mouth. Renee flipped back and forth between gushing over me and telling me that I needed to lose weight and get a tan. It seemed like he had already taken me into his fold, even before Mom had a chance to say yes.

Funny as it seemed, that meeting proved to be pivotal in my life. Little did I know that stepping into his shop would alter my entire future.

MISS YOUNG PHILIPPINES 1981

Mama Renee did not wait long. In a few months, he sent me on my first pageant experience. I was just 14 years old when I was accepted as one of 10 contestants in the Miss Young Philippines 1981 beauty pageant that was held at the Peninsula Hotel in Makati. And because I was very boyish to the point of brutishness, I did not really know how to mingle with the other contestants and ended up treating them all like boys. I would push them, pull their hair or tease them mercilessly. My behavior (which was innocent playfulness on my part) was misunderstood and resulted in a bull-session the night before coronation.

Basically, they ganged up on me. At least that’s how it felt the time. I felt so hurt by the things they said about me but I hid my feelings and pretended that I was okay. We ended the bull-session with my promise to change. Now that I’m little older, I’ve come to realize that the 9 girls just wanted me to change for the better. They wanted me to become more ‘lady-like’.

Me and my court of beauties - Miss Young Philippines batch 1981!

Me and my court of beauties – Miss Young Philippines batch 1981!

The following night I ended up winning the crown. Honestly, I didn’t know I would win but I did want to win so badly mostly because I am, by nature, very competitive and take all kinds of games, even Patintero, very seriously. So there I was on stage, overjoyed, and at that moment of my victory, I forgot all my promises to change.

In the meantime, my Mom was over the moon! She had been secretly visiting Baclaran Church, praying and walking on her knees til they bled; it was her way of gaining favor with God to make me win. Thankfully, we now both know that the whole ‘penance’ thing was unnecessary; God favors those whom He shall. But I still will never forget the sight of the open wounds on her knees and what they meant to her at the time.

Me with my Mom...

CONFESSION OF A BEAUTY QUEEN #1: I WAS UNDER-AGED

I might as well confess it now and come clean. I WAS under-aged when I won.

The manager of my 1st-Runner up sued and the issue was all over the newspapers. Some reports even said I was stripped of my title but I continued on with my duties as Miss Young Philippines 1981 and went on to represent the Philippines in the Miss Young International 1981 beauty pageant where I placed as a semi-finalist.

My 1st Runner-up Lily Andrews on the left...

My 1st Runner-up Lily Andrews on the left…

Well, I guess now is the best time to say sorry to pageant fans and to all my co-contestants specially my 1st Runner-up Lily Andrews. If I could turn the clock back and do it all over again, I would have not joined and would have waited until I reached the right age.  I realize that now. But its water under the bridge. All I can do is offer this confession and say that I’m sorry.

NEXT STOP: BB PILIPINAS 1985

Mama Renee wasn’t done with me yet. He said that the Miss Young Philippines was just the first step. The main event was the Bb. Pilipinas beauty pageant and the goal was either the Universe or the International title. Training for the Bb. Pilipinas involved doing lots of fashion shows and going to lots of parties. I continued dancing

With Pitoy Moreno Model Lito Gruet. We were the first models of Maria Clara Sangria!

With Pitoy Moreno Model Lito Gruet. We were the first models of Maria Clara Sangria!

(Filipiniana Dance) for the Manila Metropolitan Theater, better known as “The Met” and often worked as a background villager/dancer for Zarzuelas and other musicals presentations at the historical venue. Dancing helped me be graceful and control my severe stage fright.

At one point, I was invited by Pitoy Moreno to become a fashion model for Malacanang Palace. My batch of models included Bessie Badilla, Ana Francisco, Crispy Santamaria (daughter of Pianist Ingrid Santamaria), Roi Vinzon (the actor), Lito Gruet, the late Chat Silayan and Melanie Marquez who was THE favorite of Madame Imelda Marcos.

We basically had one fashion show presentation – it was the guests who changed. Every top foreign dignitary who would visit the Marcoses in the Philippines would be feted with our show. At the end of the program, Imelda Marcos would take the microphone and sing “Feelings” and/or “Dahil Sa ‘Yo” to her guest. The most memorable shows we did were for Indira Gandhi at the PICC and for the foreign actors and directors who came to Philippines for the 1st Manila International Film Fest in 1982. The main show, which was held in Intramuros, was grand and fabulous! The most famous guests to the MIFF that I remember were actors Franco Nero, Ben Kingsley and George Hamilton.

Take note that all throughout my career, Mom was with me. At every rehearsal, show, TV guesting and party, she was by my side, acting like the quintessential stage mom, keeping one eye on her daughter and ten eyes on the wolves. We had an inside joke that Mom was like my bulldog; nobody could get near me when she was around. While I chafed at her constant presence (having her around made it hard to make friends), I knew it was for the best. I was so young and gullible but with my spitfire Mom, no one could mess around with me.

Mom was always by my side! Even in newspaper articles, aahaha!

RUNNING AWAY FROM HOME AND THE CROWN

When I won Bb. Pilipinas Universe 1985...

When I won Bb. Pilipinas Universe 1985…

When I turned 18, Mom and I had a big fight – she wanted me to put college on hold so I could join Bb. Pilipinas. I tried to bargain – could I finish two years of college and THEN join the pageant? The answer was no. I tried running away from home but Mom found me within days (such was her network) and I was forced to join the pageant. I had no choice but to join it. But even if I was unhappy to be there, I went for the win, giving it my all. As I said, I am competitive by nature and hate to lose. I went home on coronation night with the Bb. Pilipinas 1985 crown on my head and my face splashed on all the newspapers the next day.

My career was made. As far as Mom and Mama Renee were concerned, I had arrived.

CONFESSIONS OF A BEAUTY QUEEN #2: I WAS NOT A FILIPINO CITIZEN

Alas, my second victory proved to be another problematic one! But since there were no complainants, it did not make it into the news. The problem was, I was a US Citizen and the requirement for Miss Universe was that contestants had to be citizens of the country they were representing. I ended up competing in Miami, Florida anyway. Miss Puerto Rico, Deborah Carthy Deu won while my best friend, Miss USA Laura Martinez Herring (who is now a Hollywood actress) entered the Top 10. I do not know if my citizenship affected my chances at the crown but I left the stage broken-hearted, wishing I had done better.

Im on the far right… this was taken during the Miss Universe 1985 competition…

I do have a consolation. A highly respected pageant website included me in their list (made in 2002) of 50 Most Beautiful Non-Finalists in Miss Universe. When I discovered that list, I couldn’t help but smile til my lips met the back of my head. There were people who still cared about me. (Does anyone have the link to that list? Please leave it in the comments section, I can’t seem to find the site…)

CONFESSION OF A BEAUTY QUEEN #3: BITTERNESS AT MOM

A few months after the Miss Universe pageant I rebelled against my parents and left home again. I wanted to lead my life the way I wanted to. And so I did. I escaped from Mom’s authority and enjoyed my freedom but it came at quite a price. My career, which started so well, never really took off and then started to wane.

Here are the reasons why I messed up:

Me w Direk Johnny Manahan who was my director on Chika Chika Chicks! This photo was taken during the rehearsals for the Queens Parade during Bb. Pilipinas Gold!

Me w Direk Johnny Manahan who was my director on Chika Chika Chicks! This photo was taken during the rehearsals for the Queens Parade during Bb. Pilipinas Gold!

First, I didn’t know how to manage myself as a talent. Example – In the 80s, when I got a permanent slot on Chika Chika Chicks (the sitcom that used to be called Chicks to Chicks which also starred beauty queens Lorraine Schuck and Bong Dimayacyac) I would come to work late; like two hours late. My reason? Since the main stars were always late, I could be late too.

The nerve of me, huh?

Second, I made lots of choices based on emotions and not wisdom. I only did what I felt like doing. So instead of investing in my career, I just enjoyed my money, spent time with friends, went to parties and just had a good time, all the time.

Third, I still had trouble getting along with people. And I couldn’t handle criticism from directors and choreographers. I took things too personally and felt defeated by their correction of me even if outside I looked confident. I expected praise because anything less meant I wasn’t good enough. I held myself to an impossible standard at every fashion show or TV job instead of turning them into learning experiences.

All three made a recipe for disaster. While no real disaster happened, NOTHING was happening to my career, which is I guess, some kind of a disaster anyway. My career was going nowhere. I was floating like a jellyfish in a cold ocean with not a single muscle to move me in the right direction. I began to unjustly blame Mom for bringing me into the world of showbiz and grew very bitter.

It took more than 15 years and the preaching of one pastor before I understood how bitterness, and the resulting unforgiveness I had for her, were dragging me down. I forget who the Pastor was, but he was from Victory Christian Fellowship in Pasig. The teaching was centered on the Parable of the Unforgiving Servant in Matthew 18:21-35. He outlined its symptoms and then prescribed the pill of forgiveness. I cried because I suddenly realized that I was a pitiable victim of bitterness.

It was then that I regretted leaving Mom. If I had not left home, my career would have blossomed, for sure! Mom was a such great manager. But God is wonderful because he used the bad that I did and turned it into a lesson for me to learn. I cannot complain with the blessings I have today, in spite of the bad behavior I had in the past.

Mom posing next to her collection my beauty queen photos and memorabilia...

Mom posing next to her collection my beauty queen photos and memorabilia…

So I took action. I sat down with my journal and wrote down two names – my Mom’s and another person whom I just could not forgive. I sat there and prayed saying: “I cannot forgive you on my own strength but I can forgive you through Jesus Christ.”

And then I enumerated the reasons why I was hurt by them and forgave them for each one. I also wrote down a goal: Not to say anything bad about them. In my Mom’s case, I also decided that each time someone asked me about her, I would say at least one good thing about her. I prayed the prayer everyday and stayed faithful to my goal. In a few weeks, I could feel the seed of forgiveness planted in my heart, growing tendrils of peace, giving me life and releasing me from the burden of bitterness.

RECONCILIATION WITH MOM

Although things are not perfect between Mom and I (we still argue and fight sometimes), it is now easy to say, “I love you!” Those words were SO INCREDIBLY hard to say to her during my years of bitterness. In fact, I never said them for a loooong time and neither did Mom. But I clearly remember the first time I said those words again, as an adult – it was in the back of an airport bus that had just picked us up from our plane and was taking us to the Ninoy Aquino International Terminal. A strong feeling of love suddenly gripped me and I just had to lean over and hug her and say, “I love you, Mom!” She hugged me back so tightly saying that she loved me too. My tears would not stop flowing.  At the time, I didn’t know where that feeling came from but now I believe God’s Spirit had something to do with it. That day is definitely up there in my list of “Best Days in My Life.”

Me with Mom, just bumming around on a remote island near Iloilo. We were in town because of a fashion show…

Years after this, I was asked to share my testimony at church and I talked about my old bitterness against Mom. In the middle of that testimony, I blurted this out without thinking: “Mom was right. I was not meant to be a doctor. I was meant to be a beauty queen. Besides, there are so many doctors out there, pero iilan lang ang Bb. Pilipinas winners!”

(To all you wonderful Doctors reading this, please don’t ban me from your clinics, I can’t live without you, aahaha!)

So to my Mom, on Mother’s Day, I am thankful that YOU are my Mom!

Without your pushing and prodding, I would not be enjoying the beauty queen life I have today! So, for all the heartaches I caused you, I ask for your forgiveness…

I was recently asked why I never joined any of the pageants for married women and moms since I still ‘have what it takes’ daw and I suddenly realized that it was because you aren’t here to be the wind beneath my wings. How could I join any pageant without you behind me? It just wouldn’t be the same. I know I am a grown woman but I still look to you for strength. Up to now, you are my Top Model because you are an outrageously crazy, terribly brave, amazingly tough and wonderfully beautiful woman!

Always remember that the crown that I wear truly belongs to you. I love you!

Happy Mother's Day Mom! I love you!!!

ABQ Blog Author Joyce Burton Titular with Bb. Pilipinas International 1986 Alice Dixson…

I had an unplanned but most pleasant get-together with some of my FAVORITE beauty queens on the TV show “Bida ng Pagbabago” on 700 Club Asia last night (May 23, 2013)! We manned the phones to receive calls, accept pledged donations, pray for troubled hearts and give them counsel.

I’ve been doing this for several years now, so it was SO exciting to see actress Alice Dixson, our Bb. Pilipinas International in 1986, volunteering for the first time! Daisy Reyes, Bb. Pilipinas World 1996 was there too and my pageant seatmate Alma Concepcion. Another beauty queen was with us too – Camilla Kim Galvez who happens to be one of the hosts at 700 Club Philippines. Camilla is 2nd Runner-up Mrs. Universe 2009!

What have our queens been up to lately? Here’s the round-up:

Alice Dixson – FABULOUSA! The last time I saw Alice was at the Parade of Queens of Bb. Pilipinas Gold. It was a wonderful surprise to see her again at the 700 Club airing and we got to spend a few minutes bonding before the show began. Currently, Alice is in between shows having turned down a role from  TV5 to give herself a break. She badly needed some ‘me-time’. After a difficult time in her life last year, she admits being on a spiritual journey which has partly led her to get involved in charity work. But Alice Dixson fans don’t have to worry, they’ll be seeing her again on TV5 in June 2013.

Daisy Reyes – CHARMING COUNSELOR! Daisy walked into the studio looking as fresh as… well.. a Daisy! She looked fantastically slim and gorgeous. I asked her if she was continuing her political career. Last time we spoke, she was a Counselor in Pateros. I was so happy to hear that in the recent May 2013 elections, Daisy Reyes was voted in again so she’s serving her second term. I wonder if she’s going to move up to higher levels… she wouldn’t say :)

Loooove Alma Concepcion (in Blue)! She our Bb. Pilipinas International 1994...

Loooove Alma Concepcion (in Blue)! She our Bb. Pilipinas International 1994…

Alma Concepcion – MIRACLE QUEEN! During the show, Alma Concepcion talked about her miracle healing: she was delivered from epilepsy, something she suffered from since her childhood. But last year, she was able to get off her daily medication and has been seizure-free. I’ve seen the ups and downs of Alma’s career and I’m just so elated to see that she is experiencing victory in her life! Another piece of good news from Alma: she’s almost done with her studies in Interior Design and will be graduating soon!

Camilla Kim Galvez – WEDDING ORGANIZER! What’s keeping this queen busy? Well, aside from her regular hosting stint at the 700 Club, Camilla Kim Galvez is quite occupied with the business that she shares with her darling hubby Raul Galvez. They own a wedding venue on Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City. Its called Blue Gardens and she says it’s doing really well. For those of you who want a classy, worry-free yet affordable wedding, can contact Blue Gardens through the blog. Just click here!

Mutya Datul, Miss Supranational Philippines 2013

Mutya Datul, Miss Supranational Philippines 2013 at her send-off!

ABQ had the chance to attend the Bb. Pilipinas send-off party for Mutya Datul at the Gloria Maris Banquet Hall (formerly the Gateway Suites) in Gateway, Cubao. And after seeing Mutya in action at the send-off, I’m convinced that she is going to stun the judges and organizers at the Miss Suprantional 2013 beauty pageant in Minsk, Belarus.

As in!

I don’t know about you, but I think her type of beauty will be ‘ma-benta‘ in Belarus which is right in the middle of the European continent. I think the Europeans will love her, particularly her catwalk abilities which are meteoric to say the least. Another big asset: Her Maria Clara face is beautiful not just from afar but also up-close. Pageant fans in the audience kept saying that Mutya Datul’s type of beauty is pang-Universe, International and World. But right now, her mission is to enjoy the Miss Supranational 2013 beauty pageant and in the process, win the crown for the Philippines!

The Queens in attendance at the send-off included the Bb. PilipinasGold 2013 Court of Beauties – Pia Wurtzbach (1st Runner-up), Cindy Miranda (Tourism), Bea Santiago (International) and Ara Arida (Universe). Also in attendance, Shamcey Supsup (Ms Universe 2011 3rd Runner-up) and Elaine Kay Moll (Miss Supranational Philippines 2012). Elaine is Mutya’s predecessor and successfully placed 4th in Miss Suprantional 2012 in Poland.

A light moment between the queens…

Seeing how close all the current winners are to each other shows that Bb Pilipinas has been very successful at keeping the spirit of camaraderie and support among the queens. Every year, I look forward to the messages from each of them to the queen who is being sent off to her international pageant.

Mutya will need all the advice and words of encouragement she can get because this will be her first trip out of the Philippines. She said that this is actually two answered prayers – to travel abroad and to represent the Philippines in an international pageant! Wow, this trip is like hitting two birds with one stone!!!

Many Filipinos are not aware of the Supranational beauty pageant so here’s a quick background: the Supranational is run by the Panamanian group World Beauty Association but held in Europe since it came into being in 2009. In spite of its newness, the Supranational has attracted some 94 nations this year making it one of the biggest international beauty tilts in the world.

Last year, the Philippines won the Supranational 3rd Runner-up title after 5’11” stunner Elaine Kay Moll (in photo below) wowed the judges in host nation Poland. Will this year’s representative, Mutya Datul surpass that achievement? This blogger thinks so and believes that Mutya Datul might even win the Supranational 2013 crown!

Ang concern lang kay Mutya (and I said this before when she competed in Mutya ng Pilipinas and lost) is her communication skills. She struggles with English. However, I agree with what last year’s Miss Supranational Philippines Elaine Kay Moll (in photo above) said to me at the party – Mutya has content! She just struggles with expressing it.

Most true, I say, specially since Mutya was able to handle all the questions from the press but she did answer mostly in Pilipino.

Now it’s Mutya Datul’s turn to address the guests at her sendoff and answer questions from the Press…

Mutya admitted to me that she used to be so afraid of talking in public, She would be so nervous that she wouldn’t hear her own words. But after training under Dale Carnegie and ESSA (Entrepreneurship School of Asia), she’s no longer tongue-tied in front of people. She can now hear herself and organize her thoughts.

Here are more photos of the beauty queens together…

There’s the beautiful Shamcey Supsup at the very left end of the row. She looked soooo slim, maybe even slimmer than her competition weight! But boy she looked awesome and radiated her beauty like the sun. I guess all brides-to-be will glow just like her! She’s tying the knot I hear by year end.

Mutya Datul... prim and proper...

Mutya Datul… prim and proper…

Mutya Datul, who is naturally thin, says that she always thought that being thin was enough to be competitive in a pageant but realized she was wrong.  Trainer-to-the-beauty-queens John Jay Cuay said that she needed to build some muscle and get toned. After working with John in the gym for a few months, she has developed betters abs, toned shoulders and her waistline, which was 23 inches, is now down to 22 inches. Mutya says she is so happy with the results!

Boy would I kill for a 22 inch waistline!

When Mutya Datul spoke to the guests at the send-off party, the very first words out of her mouth were wordsof gratitude to Madame Stella Marquez Araneta for giving her such a wonderful opportunity and for trusting her to represent the Philippines abroad. You could really hear the sincerity in Mutya’s voice as she offered her thanks to SMA.

Some info on Mutya: Full name is Mutya Johanna Datul. This 21-year old beauty hails from Santa Maria, Isabela and is proud to call herself a ‘probinsyana’. Although she comes from a poor family, she is very resourceful and driven. She would join beauty pageants in Isabela (and win most of them) to get extra funds for her schooling and medical expenses of her Mom. Her first national pageant was Mutya ng Pilipinas 2012 where she entered the Top 10. Her second national pageant was Bb. Pilipinas 2013 where she finally struck gold winning the Miss Supranational Philippines title. After she is done with the world of pageants she hopes to enter the world of showbiz and become an actress and celebrity.

Mutya Datul demonstrates her ‘malikot’ na Salagubang Walk

If previous Bb. Pilipinas beauty queens Shamcey Supsup had the Tsunami Walk and Janine Tugonon, the Cobra Walk, Mutya Datul, our Miss Supranational Philippines 2013 has her own signature walk which she has dubbed: The Salagubang (Beetle). Mutya demonstrated the walk in the video below taken during her send-off at the Gloria Maris Banquet Hall (formerly the Gateway Suites) in Gateway Mall, Cubao.

Mutya describes her Salagubang Walk as like flying but with sexy half-pivots. She says that she was inspired to name her walk after the Philippine beetle because they are native to her town, Santa Maria in Isabela. Mutya adds that the Salagubang can be ‘malikot’ specially when you catch them and play with them. And they might look scary but are actually a lot of fun.

I think she should have named it the Salaginto walk since she won during Bb. Pilipinas GOLD! Anywhoo… at the end of her demo, she had the audience clapping and cheering!

But honestly, what do you think? Will Mutya Datul’s walk fly in Miss Supranational 2013 or does it bug the heck out of you?

All opinions are welcome, pro and con and in between, but please deliver them respectfully! Mwaahhhh…
